Name: Bracket Fungi (Polyporus sp.)
Classification: Fungi > Basidiomycota > Agaricomycete > Polyporales > Polyporaceae > Polyporus
Description: Bracket Fungi have woody or leathery fruiting bodies that have many pores under the cap. Spores are release through these pores. Not all bracket fungi are decomposers of dead wood. Some are parasites on living trees, causing them to decay before they die. Most species of bracket fungi have fruiting bodies that are long-lived (perennial) and grow outwards in concentric rings, producing more spores each growing season. Lingzhi (Ganoderma lucidum), the valuable traditional chinese medicine, is a bracket fungus too!
